Range Rover 2001 4.6 Vogue?

I am looking to buy, but keep hearing horror stories! Have heard that they have trouble with Water and Oil mixing in the bores, plus Gearbox worries etc... Is this all for real or by 2001 have Land Rover ironed out all the problems? Any advice?
